The two large "free" works (BWV 548 & 544) get a robust and authoritative rendition. The tempos are just right, and Ms. Alain brings out the inherent grandeur of these pieces. The chorale preludes are all played with great sensitivity, smoothness, and wonderful registrations. The three readings of "Allein Gott..." cover the spectrum from somewhat introspective (BWV 662), via extroverted (BWV 663; compare Piet Kee's more introspective version on Chandos), to bubbling virtuosity (BWV 664). To my ears, this is Bach-playing at its finest. | | Acknowledgements: | Thank you to the following for submitting this recording and for your comments: | | Date First Submitted: | 03/16/1996 | | Purchasing: | Suggested Purchasing Sources
