Overview - Bowyer's cycle, in progress since 1991, features unmannered virtuosity, an organ of striking tone quality and an exceptionally realistic modern recording. Each disc contains a variety of works in the form of a recital, sustaining interest throughout. Bowyer's intriguing registrations distinguish the set.
Volume V - This volume is one of the truly outstanding entries in the series and I have returned to it frequently. It displays the wonderful variety in Bach's organ works and contains much beautiful playing. The first two movements of the A minor concerto come quickly to mind: these are performed most sensitively but also contain effective contrasts in registration that highlight the concerto structure. The recording captures the rush of air through the pipes, affording a magical quality of "breath" similar to that in the 3rd volume in this series. BWV 725 is quite powerful, and the Fugue in G (BWV 576) flies along at rapid tempo. Other notable entries include the Aria in F (BWV 587), and Christ ist erstanden BWV 746 which features reed stops. The Toccata and fugue in F BWV 540 is spectacular and engaging. Full recommendation. |
