The Marcussen Organ at Sct. Hans Kirke, Odense, Denmark
Overview - Bowyer's cycle, in progress since 1991, features unmannered virtuosity, an organ of striking tone quality and an exceptionally realistic modern recording. Each disc contains a variety of works in the form of a recital, sustaining interest throughout. Bowyer's intriguing registrations distinguish the set.
Volume VI - This is another superb entry in this series. Bower's Toccata, adagio & fugue BWV 564 is among the finest I have heard, and in the same league as the impressive recording on Deutsche Grammophon by Simon Preston. There is also some exceptional playing in the prelude of BWV 533 and the Toccata in E. The settings of Valet will ich dir geben are quite spectacular, and the liner notes do not fail to point out that this is likely the sort of stuff Bach used to "confuse" his congregation, resulting in a reprimand during his upstart youth. There are fewer applications of the unusual reed stops relative to the other volumes. |
