This set of "Organ Miniatures" is a treat in so many ways. First, my favorite organist, Christopher Herrick recorded by the recording genius Paul Niederberger (whom I mention due to his technical wizardry in making this difficult to record instrument sound so life-like). Next, the running time for this set of discs is one-hundred fifty-six minutes, six seconds! There are too many high points on this disc to comment but I especially enjoy the Three-part and the Six-part Ricercare from the Musical Offering. I've never heard them performed on and organ and they sound superb. The 'Couperin' aria is another gem. Bach must have really enjoyed writing these pieces and it sounds like Herrick had a grand time recording them. One feature of Herrick's playing that impresses me so much is this: Whereas many musicians succumb to their egos and pompously try to stamp their mark on the score, making the music something it wasn't intended to be, Herrick allows Bach's music to speak for itself; Nothing flashy or gaudy here, no excessive ornamentation to ruin the music. He allows Bach's music to speak on it's own terms and this is what clearly seperates him from the crowd. There is a certain integrity in his playing. Another must-have disc, highly recommended. |
