All of the period instrument recordings of this work are noteworthy but I find this the best because of its sensitivity to the subject of the birth of Christ. It's an emotional performance, deeply considered and deeply performed. Additionally, countertenor Andreas Scholl's contribution makes the recording just that much more desirable. His tone is gorgeous and he sings from the heart. The recording quality is superlative!

This is the best original instruments performance I've heard. Scholl's beautiful voice astonish everyone. Röschmann is a very beautiful singer. All notes and translations are useful for understanding this very special work. Jacobs feels theatre invocation, with some relation to the complete Monteverdi Operas recorded by the same label. Harmonia Mundi's artists are excellent Bach performers. |
