A fair rendition. Though David Oistrach's lack of drama sometimes leaves a sense of disappointment, for example in the Gigue of the A minor concerto his style in the Andante is spot on - he plays with a sense of searching uncertainty which left me in raptures.
His son Igor never quite came up to his standard, but they evidently have a good understanding of each other and play well together in the double concertos.
Overall a recommended recording though not my favourite in some areas. Grumiaux adds more drama, but lacks subtlety, Menuhin's tone is unsurpassed and if you're looking for a period performance look elsewhere. |
