Guido Schiefen succeeds at bringing out all the emotions that Bach imbued these suites with. The recording is good, with dynamics easily detected. The sound, in fact, is quite clear. That is perhaps a bit unfortunate for Schiefen, for although he does play the suites well, his technique sounds as though it gets in the way. In the first Prelude, he seems to be inadvertently hitting against the cello, adding an unncessary percussion to the music. The recording picks this up and makes it somewhat distracting. Also, Schiefen at times borders upon playing some of the suites in rubato--a little sloppy. The emotional playing probably comes from the fact that Schiefen cheats with a little rubato. Nevertheless, at worst, this is a tolerable performance.

This is a terrific recording for the price. Schiefen has a pretty sturdy sound, with little or no vibrato, which allows him to make each line sound clearly. Also, he projects the architecture of each movement well. |
