Recommended by Penguin Guide. Playing is remarkably lucid, recording very clear. TAOF seems very well suited for string quartet; all voices sing audibly, even for novice ears like mine. Excellent.

I own several recordings of this work, played on different keyboards, on two pianos, and by chamber and full orchestras. This remains my favorite. The four voices layer the fugues in such a way that it is up to the listener whether to follow the intertwining lines of melodies, or blend them together. The tempos are always appropriate, and all four musicians play together as one. It is quite beautiful and stands up to repeated listenings.
