Perhaps this is because the recorder is a relatively neutral instrument, which allows Bach's play with counterpoint to speak for itself, and because the individual instruments mix so well but at the same time are easily distinguishable from one another. The quality of the performance is superb. For the various contrapuncti and canons, 17 different recorders were used, including the unusual "great bass in F" specifically designed for this recording.
