At first I was thrilled with this recent recording of the Goldberg Variations by Canadian harpsichordist Luc Beausejour but I have since grown tired of it due to it's overly obsessive virtuosity. Luc puts everything he has into this recording but it's almost too much: I've heard this otherwise fine harpsichordist play the Goldberg Variations on a live CBC broadcast and it was more 'natural', personal, and approachable. Scott Ross' now reissued recording of this work on Virgin Veritas 5 61869 2 is full of subtle nuances that Luc lacks, and Ross avoids the heavy handed approach of the Trevor Pinnock recording on the Archiv label. |
