These difficult to find selections, especially BWV 1052, are worth the search because they reveal the intensity I believe these works were originally written for. Lesser recordings have produced a more bland interpretation. The best recording ever made! The price is a bargain too at around 8.99!

I want to add to what Thom Washington has written about Ivor Boltons recordings. It is a pity that Bolton's interpretations are no longer available. In spite of "original instruments", they are to the harpsicord concerti what Heifetz was to the double concerto for violin. Brisk tempi, no-nonsense, straight forward, intensity and no mannerisms, sturdy energy. My only complaint would be the weak sound of the few strings (only a string quartet pluss bass). I have the harpsicord concerti on two CDs, PCD 864 and PCD 901 both IMP Classic. Somebody should reissue these gems. |
