The Marcussen Organ at Sct. Hans Kirke, Odense, Denmark
Overview - Bowyer's cycle, in progress since 1991, features unmannered virtuosity, an organ of striking tone quality and an exceptionally realistic modern recording. Each disc contains a variety of works in the form of a recital, sustaining interest throughout. Bowyer's intriguing registrations distinguish the set.
Volume IV - This disc consists almost entirely of preludes and fugues flanked by the toccatas which open and close the recital. This lends a rather subdued, academic tone to this volume. The playing is brilliant, particularly in the toccatas, and the preludes from BWV 575 & 560. Of special interest is the registration employed in the G major prelude (BWV 557) from the Eight 'Short' Preludes & Fugues: it sounds like a giant synthesizer with a flanger. |
