Comments:"It was a winter evening in 1962. I turned on the radio and heard part of the second Bach suite. I felt that I had never heard music made like that before and was so struck by the experience that I turned off the lights and listened to the rest in the semi-dark and in rapt silence. . . .I felt as if I had entered some extraordinarily reassuring other world; a world of velvety magic." The music that so moved Christopher Nupen is the very same recording that was made that night by the BBC and is preserved on this disk. Du Pre was barely 17 years of age at the time. Her 2 Bach cello suites (as far as I know she never had the opportunity to record the others) are most like Casals' performance, although perhaps not so precise in places and a bit lighter in touch overall. But the magic is there. The Britten and Falla are also very good. EMI has just begun releasing some previously unpublished recordings by Du Pre. The first (EMI 5 55528 2) includes Richard Strauss' "Don Quixote" and Edouard Lalo's Cello Concerto in D minor. Aslo, Royalties from the sale of the BBC recordings disk (and its companion volume 2 - no Bach, but delightful nonetheless) go the the Jacqueline Du Pre Memorial Appeal. The Fund's purpose is to hlp young musicians suffering from crippling degenerative diseases, such as that from which Du Pre died, "to live in comfort and dignity."
