Very nice to hear these works on pianos! Unfortunately the skills of the pianists are quite varied and this had to be a recording engineers nightmare as well. Four pianos and an orchestra? Hats off to former German President Helmut Schmidt for participating in this obviously joyful project as one of the pianists - even if he's the one who's a bit one-dimensional! Hmmmmm. But how many politicians can really appreciate Bach - or much more than rock n roll saxaphone?? The slow movements - especially the Largo in the 4 piano concerto - make the purchase well worth it for me. If you like Bach keyboard work performed on the piano it's a good but not a great buy. Seems like everyone's trying just a bit too hard somehow, in some prolonged passages, and this gives it a certain determined heaviness that isn't quite satisfying in my book. |
