Sir John Eliot Gardiner coaxes a very clear and crisp sound from the period instrumental ensemble and the vocalists. Unlike some other performances which feature only organ, a harpsichord continuo is also used in these cantatas. The Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) is especially powerful and poignant, with the timpani part coming through the rich instrumental texture quite well. Overall, a wonderful CD, part of a "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage," an edition of Bach's church cantata cycle recorded by Gardiner and the ensembles he founded, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists, on the Archiv Produktion label. |
