The works on this CD were recorded live during John Eliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage undertaken in 2000. Striking, as always when Gardiner is conducting, is the great enthusiasm displayed in the performance and the emphasis on the meaning of the text. Gardiner appears to take this very literally in his interpretation of the aria "Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen" (BWV 82) which is played very slowly (11'11 against Herreweghe's 9'38), like a lullaby, and takes a bit of getting used to. However, Peter Harvey's flawless German and emphatic performance , make this a surprisingly sensitive recording of a much interpreted cantata. Paul Agnew and Robin Tyson are left with the more obviously joyful arias on this recording and convincingly do so.
