This is a wonderful cantata with a particularly beautiful opening chorus for voices (soprano has the Lutheran cantus firmus of the cantata title) 2 horns, 2 oboes, strings and continuo. Typical of the Harnoncourt recordings on period instruments there is a refreshing clarity and directness to the recording. A possible rival may be with the complete Tom Koopman series when it comes out. The volumes already out - which I don't think include BWV 1 yet - seems more natural and less mannered than the Harnoncourt interpretations and have a superior recorded sound. Still for those that prefer the original foreces for Bach, Harnoncourt is the best available and extremely enjoyable. |
