However, although Nikolaus Harnoncourt's playing is certainly fervent and committed, the dry acoustic that besets this 1965 recording makes it a hard disc to enjoy. I also find the artistry to be somewhat on the antiseptic side, as though in (over)reaction to Romanticism and its excesses. It is nice to hear Suite 6 played on what is thought to be its intended instrument, the "violoncello piccolo," but in other respects I have to classify this release as closer to a history lesson than to a living, breathing performance of these classic works.
