This "mood" compilation called "Forest Scenes" includes a transcription of the Goldberg Variations for one six-string guitar (aria, variations 1,2,4,13,19,9,7,15,27,30, aria), by Lynn Harting-Ware. Her performance is admirable, though the tempo is particularly slow. The limitations of the transcription are apparent, though not destructive. Unlike Rodarmer's transcription on two guitars especially made for the Goldbergs, Harting-Ware's transcriptiion captures the general sense of the piece. "While there were many frustrating months as I endeavoured to capture the spirit and magic of this music on six strings, I was nevertheless entirely possessed and compelled by it," writes Harting-Ware in the liner notes. Her treatment of the aria is somewhat disconcerting, but overall I like this recording (yes, even the aria). To capture on one instrument the significance of the Goldbergs is quite an acomplishment and her affection for it comes through.
