The notes say "The large orchestral forces bear witness to a certain nostalgia for the past, especially in the use of two viola da gambas and two lutes." This explains why that excellent instrument, the viola da gamba, is not prominent in Bach's works - he was expected to be 'with it' in his day, I think.
