This is a refreshing and unpretentious rendition of the Easter Oratorio. Even people who don't necessarily care for period instruments will like it. Herreweghe uses just the right tempos and a small chorus, which gives it an intimate feel. While this certainly cannot be considered the definitive version of the work, it is an excellent choice. The cantata is also well done - Herreweghe avoids dragging out the solo parts, making it a fine recording. |
