Very attractive performances of two of the short Masses with the Sanctus BWV 238 - which features SATB voices, cornett, 2 violins, viola, continuo. Bruce Dickey plays the cornett and this is clearly the best recording of this short work to date (later recordings by Pickett and McCreesh are also good but this one is a real winner!). This work shows how the cornett (cornetto/zink) 'locks' into the soprano voice sound and transforms the sound (as a cornettist myself - my favourite baroque 'special effect'). The two Missae are performed with great beauty and the soloists (Mellon, Lesne, Pregardien & Kooy) are at the top of the field. Music of Bach that should be heard more often. The same forces also recorded the other two Missae for the VIRGIN label but, alas, I do not have this CD. |
