Superb, sober performance in the tradition of double choir and double orchestra on authentic instruments.

The CD-ROM supplied with this recording is beautifully done and well worth the extra money. You can view & listen all at once or in smaller chunks, like picking chapters in an illustrated book. The illustrations are stunning, the whole feel of it is like a Rembrandt painting. A lovely tribute to Bach for his 250th Anniversary which should be in every music library.

This recording is so touching and personal. Herreweghe takes it at just the right speed, moving but not too fast. He produces a recording with such moving solos from Ulrik Cold, Peter Kooy and Barbara Schlick. I would recommend this as a better recording than the Karl Richter or the John Eliot Gardiner. |
