Review by Jan Hanford:

Performance: Excellent
Recording: Exceptional

I am enjoying the Hanssler Bachakademie edition tremendously. Their choice of instrumentation is sometimes unusual, which I find refreshing with so many similar recordings around it's sometimes hard to tell them apart.

I think this is an important recording for the simple fact that cd 1 is performed on a lute-harpsichord and cd 2 is performed on a clavichord. It's a nice change from the multitude of harpsichord and piano recordings of yet the same old works. The works on these cd's are not widely recorded, being some of the more obscure of Bach's keyboard works, making this cd a must have for me.

Robert Hill's performance is extraordinary and the sound is exquisite (recorded quite close and with just a little room ambience). I can usually find fault with a keyboard performance (who can't, it's easy), "too much of this and not enough of that" kind of thing. But not here. I found his tempos and interpretation to be perfectly suited to the music and was totally captivated. Even his use of ornamentation sounded just right, rather than intrusive as it sometimes can be.

One special note: included is an earlier version of the Chromatic Fantasie in D Minor (BWV 903a) performed on the clavichord. What a gem!
