Some rare pieces in a quite satisfactory performance.

Very competent crisp phrasing. Mature ornamentation, especially of the slower pieces like BWV 917. Very nice tempo. This is a professional playing music meant for a professional.
Especially liked Dr. Hill's treatment of BWV 944. Dense and "fast" pieces such as 944 can get "busy" unless they are balanced and handled with care. Dr. Hill does a fine job with such a difficult task. Not surprising, his version of BWV 903 (Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, on Hanssler 92.105) has a cantibile nuance in it. Anyone who can make such a difficult piece sing is worth a listen on other tough pieces. |
