Jarrett is among the artists most faithful to Bach's fair copy of the Book I. Listening through with the urtext, I couldn't find as much as a stray mordant. There are no extremes of tempo or dynamics, either. Tempi are ebullient, voices are articulated & clear, & the recorded sound is intimate & realistic. A textbook performance, one any piano teacher could recommend enthusiastically. Standout performance: D major Prelude & Fugue, BWV 850. |
