I was surprised I liked this performance so much. Playing modern instruments, in modern style, the result is lush and beautiful. Their modern approach sometimes reminds me of a 20th century string quartet, rather than Bach, which says much for Bach's visionary genius. I was glad to have the canons included. The final fugue is left unfinished, which I prefer. They also included the Choral "Vor deinen Thron tret' ich hiermit" which was included in the printed edition after Bach's death.
The performance is not a transcription or arrangement, but (from the liner notes) "simply a faithful reproduction of every note that Bach wrote." Indeed it is . A lovely recording that I highly recommend. |
