Prelude & Fugue in E-flat, BWV 552 | | Format: | Compact Disc | | Record Label: | Chandos | | Catalog Number: | CHAN 0590 | | Year Released/Recorded: | 1996 | | Total Playing Time: | 66'03 | | Comments: | The qualities that make "Piet Kee plays Bach, Vol. 1" (Chandos CHAN 0506) such an attractive CD apply equally to this recording. Piet Kee is in fine form, unveiling the music, as it were, in an utterly natural and clear fashion. The robustly played Prelude and Fugue in C are separated by the slow movement of the 5th Trio Sonata, in accordance with one of the oldest manuscripts containing the Prelude and Fugue. The 4th Trio Sonata is played gently with delicate registrations, making it soun d very much like chamber music. The introverted character of the Fantasia is underlined with stately playing and a "Principals-only" registration (save for the Subbas 16' in the pedal). The Schuebler chorales are typified by calm tempi and a variety of colourful registrations. The Prelude and Fugue in E-flat make a majestic impression: the Prelude solid and impressive as Mt. Everest, the Fugue imbued with a subtle tension that becomes more obvious as the piece goes on, and culminates in an exciting conclusion. Piet Kee's choice of diverse compositions and registrations provides a good example
of the wealth of musical resources this unique organ possesses.
