Another long-awaited release of early recordings by Ralph Kirkpatrick. The recordings in this 4 cd set are milestones in the history of Bach recordings. The idea of historically accurate instruments was a new concept as was Kirkpatrick's approach to interpretation. The sound is often mechanical, sometimes harsh but frequently lovely. His tempos are somewhat slower than what we're used to now but sound delightfully appropriate to the music. Having studied with Wando Landowska, he brought Bach into the modern recording age with these recordings and set the standard by which many subsequent musicians have been measured. Highly recommended.
