Having been accustomed to Gould's interpretation of this masterpiece, my breath was literally taken away when I finally heard how the Variations "should" be played. Kirkpatrick plays these no-holds-barred, making full use of the instrument and ultimately producing an almost orchestral effect. I wouldn't presume to make an educated comparison with other harpsichord or piano recordings; all I can say is that everyone must have the chance to hear this one.
