Anyone interested in a musical "thumbprint" of the famous St. Bavo organ need look no further than this marvellous CD. Jos van der Kooy, "city organist of Haarlem" since 1990, presents this stately organ through a "recital" of six corner-stones of the organ repertoire. The program is anchored by Bach's Passacaglia, rendered in utterly logical and imposing fashion, which makes this performance an impressive tribute to composition and composer, organ and organist alike. At least three of the surrounding five pieces are somewhat linked to the St. Bavo organ in that their composers are known to have heard, and in some cases played, the organ themselves. However, whether these experiences had any influence on the works recorded here is unknown.
The recording is excellent. To my ears, it strikes the perfect balance between an attractive proximity to the organ - which succeeds in conveying much sonic detail, and a discreet awareness of the space in which it exists - which only enhances the grandeur of the overall sound image.
