Comments:Both in appearance and sound, the organ of the "Cathedral of St. John" makes a serious, but nevertheless beautiful, impression. It is civilized, genteel, understated organ, and Ton Koopman's playing harmonizes nicely with these qualities. The Prelude in C sounds wonderfully energetic, its accompanying Fugue contented. The three chorale preludes from the "Clavier³bung III" are played with much sensitivity and quiet introspection. The performance of the triosonate Nr. 3 is my favourite recording of this piece. Here, to my ears, Koopman is wonderfully attuned to the sonate's "autumnal" character, and uses the organ to supreme effect in expressing it. The smaller of the two Prelude & Fugues in e (BWV 533) receive an appropriately rhetorical treatment, complete with echo effects throughout the Fugue! "Allein Gott..." is rendered thoughtfully, with many "extra" embellishments. I'm less taken by the concluding Prelude & Fugue in e (BWV 548), which, to my taste, sounds quirky to the extent of making this somewhat of a "caricature" performance (compare Marie-Claire Alain). Overall, a fine recital!
