There are a number of reasons for this. To begin with, the (four manual, 81 stop) organ is magnificent. Built by "Orgelbau Johannes Klais, Bonn" in 1980 it is truly a masterpiece of contemporary organ building. Not because it is equipped with all sorts of "space age" gadgets (it might very well be, but I don't know), but because of the unique, contemporary, and awe-inspiring sounds it can produce. Of course, a masterwork like this needs a master to make it live up to its potential. From my perspective, Nicolas Kynaston is just that. Not only is he an impressive virtuoso, but he also chose a non-standard program of fairly unknown but fabulous arrangements. On this CD, a gorgeous sound palette, daunting virtuosity, and surprising novelties combine to make a highly original recital, which is recorded with exactly the right balance, presenting soft passages with surprising clarity and directness while delivering the loudest sections with overwhelming grandeur. Truly a "must" for any organ buff!
