What a beautiful production! Those who have heard Dom André Laberge play before will be familiar with the reverence, care and clarity with which he renders the music. The performance captured on this disk is no exception. This is utterly refined playing, capable of nourishing the spirit.

Dom Laberge is the titular organist of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. Its recent III/42 organ by Karl Wilhelm (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec) is austere in appearance but opulent in sound. With its detached pedal towers, it suggests North German models, but its tonal colours are reminiscent of more southerly examples. That may be one reason why the music on this disc seems to have such a warm glow about it.

The program is a model of balance and can easily be listened to in one sitting. French and English notes inform about the music, the organist and the organ. If I had to find any fault at all with this production it would be the absence of the registrations used, but that is clearly a minor point.

No matter how many recordings of Bach organ works you may already possess, this one deserves a special place alongside all the others.
