A rather good version of the suites by a period instrument ensemble available on a single CD. The ensemble is smallish, with single strings per part throughout. The recording is very clear, although the harpsichord seems a little more distant than it should. The tempo is brisk; again, the four suites are on one CD here, but brisk tempos seem to be becoming the norm for baroque interpretations anyway. There are only a few weaknesses on this disc... for example, the Air on Suite No. 3 is played too mechanically and without emotion. The fine playing elsewhere on the disc and excellent sound more than make up for this. Overall, this is a recording I would recommend for anyone looking for a period performance on a single CD. |
