Adolf Herseth's sparkling performance of the second Brandenburg demonstrates why the principle trumpet of the Chicago symphony was widely regarded as the best in the business. James Levine is equally bewitching at the harpsichord in the fifth concerto. When I played the latter piece for a friend who is a fine professional pianist her jaw dropped in absolute disbelief. And Kathleen Battle's singing is a superb encore. |
