NEW RELEASE ACR 45
Wanda Landowska and Yehudi Menuhin in Concert
A Classical Record is proud to announce the release of the only recorded document of these two great musicians performing together in concert. This concert took place in New York's Town Hall on December 20th 1944. Even though many years of friendship and mutual admiration preceded this event, this was the only time they performed together in public. The concert was given in preparation for a studio recording for RCA of the complete Sonatas for Harpsichord and Violin by J.S. Bach. Unfortunately only the E Major was recorded, as their busy schedule prevented them form completing the cycle.
Until recently it was thought that no record had survived of this concert. Fortunately for music lovers and admirers of these two artists a copy from an in house recording was recently made available through the kindness of one of Landowska's closest friends, Denise Restout. Aside from providing the source for this issue Mme. Restout has written for the program notes her recollections of this event. She gives us a glimpse of how these two great minds worked together with a contagious passion for the music they were to perform.
The program consists of Sonata No.1 in B Minor BWV 1014; Sonata No. 2 in A Major BWV 1015; Sonata No.5 in F Minor BWV 1018 and Sonata No.3 in E Major BWV 1016. Transfers were done by Seth B. Winner, a specialist in digital mastering of archival material. Additional notes with an interview excerpt with Lord Menuhin regarding the concert was provided by Teri Noel Towe.
