Michael Murray playing the famous Christian Muller organ at the Great Church of St. Bavo, Haarlem, the Netherlands.

I obtained this CD because I had heard of Michael Murray's good reputation. However, I was disappointed because the playing is MUCH too slow. I can understand that in light of the acoustics it must be slowed down but I have heard these pieces played faster in more gigantic acoustics. The playing itself, aside from the very drawn out tempos, is okay; there is nothing spectacular and Murray does not bring out the best of the organ. There is much better stuff out there.

I don't know what has happened to Michael Murray, but this CD was a huge disappointment. I have followed Murray since he was on the Advent label, but when I obtained this CD I was terribly disappointed. While the recording itself is poor, and slow, his playing was incredibly uninspiring! Murray's early recordings had vigor and he clearly took chances when he played. They sound exciting fresh, while this CD is boring. It was a letdown because you have just a fantastic organ with a great performer. I cannot recommend this recording.
