Note on BWV 1070:
The received wisdom that BWV 1070 was in fact composed by W. F. Bach has been challenged in recent times. I quote from a concert program of the Freiburger Barockorchester (October 11, 2003, Stuttgarter Liederhalle):
diese Zuweisung ist nicht haltbar; nirgendwo in diesem - unbezweifelbar faszinierenden ? Werk lässt sich der ausgeprägte und in allen seinen Entwicklungsstufen stets leicht erkennbare Personalstil W. F. Bachs ausmachen.
The Freiburger Barockorchester argue on stylistic grounds that this must be a work of a composer from Southern Germany or Austria. They believe that J. S. or W. F. Bach may have owned the manuscript that was copied by Penzel in 1753, creating the basis for the original, though obviously erroneous attribution to J. S. Bach.
