I ran out to purchase this recording after hearing it reviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered." I can still hear the power of the gut strings on Podger's baroque violin, even though I was introduced to them on a car radio. The unanimously superlative reviews and recommendations of this recording are all well-deserved.

Podger's deference to the original score, judicious use of ornament and flawless technique on the baroque violin combine to make this recording surely one of the most revelatory of all the many recordings of the Sonatas and Partitas. Beauty and sublimity are revealed as being inherant to the music itself and not simply to the interpretation. Very highly recommended. |
