Orchestral Suites played by guitar quartet might seem an over-ambitious project, but in this case it is very successful. Using several 8 string instruments alongside the usual 6 string, these players produce excellent ensemble & a wide range of sonority, captured on a fine recording. Even Air on a G String manages to sound fresh in this version, while the ornamentation in the extended ouvertures is effortlessly integrated. Tempos are well judged, never ponderous. Also background breathing (a problem on other Galbraith recordings) is barely discernible. These suites contain some of Bach's most upbeat music & the Brazilian Guitar Quartet convey this in utterly convincing fashion. A recording to appeal not only to guitar afficionadas. |
