As far as I can tell, the last organ recording made by Karl Richter. Recorded on the Silbermann Organ of Freiberg Cathedral, at the same time he was recording the Schemellis Gesangbuch with Peter Schreier. Herr Richter plays with his customary precision and conciseness, but with greater power than I have heard in his earlier recordings. The combination of the performer, a superb organ and Archiv engineering at its best make this an exceptional recording. The Dorische Toccata and Fuge is an especially powerful performance, although the other two pieces are excellent. I use this recording to test stereo equipment prior to purchase. Although I own all the Karl Richter, Helmut Walcha and Alf Linder recordings I have been able to come across, this remains my favorite. |
