This is Volume 1 of the Complete Bach recording scheduled for completion in 2000. The sound is excellent. This is a modern instrument recording with an experienced choir and orchestra. The soloists are excellent with great breath control. Since this is done on modern instruments there is less contrast between the various choirs of the orchestra than you would find on period intrument performance. Still, this is the best sounding Bach Cantata disk I have.

I prefer this series of the Cantatas recordings to any other, even the Koopman. The sound is rich and warm and the performance is exquisite. Rilling's approach is more traditional than the recent "historic" style performances. For this reason, I enjoyed the Cantatas more than ever before. Gorgeous! |
