Winter&Winter puts out recordings of consistent high quality and I've very rarely been disappointed. The packaging is particularly lovely for this one. However, the booklet contains no information about the sonatas and, instead, provides a very brief and strange bio of Bach and short bios of the musicians. The music: sublime!
The performances are lovely, particularly the harpsichord. The sound of the baroque violin is a little thinner than the modern violin and the tone goes very nicely with the harpsichord. I found the tempos to be lively without being frenetic and the slow movements are sweet and expressive. The recording has a lot of reverb and I think the instruments would have sounded better miked more closely. However, the performances are so extraordinary that I do highly recommend this cd. |
