In these remarkable recordings the 80 year old cello maestro Mstislav Rostropovich pours his entire being into the trascendental works that are the Bach Cello Suites. Rostropovich's resonant tone, coupled with sprightly tempi that serve to convey the melodic line, reveal the works as never before. EMI's recording is also nothing short of perfect.
Purists will prefer the classic recording of Pablo Casals, freshly remastered by Naxos Historical, whilst Yo-Yo-Ma's recent, second recording over romantices the music, lending weight to Rostropovich's comment that one should not attempt these pieces until one is at least sixty.
Musicians though will love this one. A masterpiece.
