Recorded in an old, French church. The suites become magical. The nuances of the architecture accentuate the tonal qualities of the cello I love most. A very clean recording - no noise - the cello filling the room, and nothing more. A very mature look at the suites. A pinnacle in Rostropovich's career.

You will come off this album wishing you could make movies using these pieces as scores; from the frail giddiness of the prelude of first suite to the dramatic sobriety of the the c minor, this collection will placate your rainy afternoons when you would refuse to hear the coherence of words, and you just need a cup of chamomile. If the affirming and uplifting final suite does not more than soothe your raw edges then you would really need a therapist. |
