This is among the neglected gems of the Bach cello suites on record. Schiff plays with refinement and panache, and is recorded up-close in an ideal warm acoustic. Some may find the detachÚ bowing and brisk tempo in the G major prelude put-offish, but the beautifully articulated Allemande which follows should allay any doubts about Schiff's artistry, as he seems fully inside this repertoire. Shiff shines in the E-flat suite (No. 4) which begins the second disc, and I recommend to newcomers that they listen to disc two first to avoid the shock of the controversial Prelude mentioned above which opens the set. After a shockingly disappointing Yo-Yo Ma all-Bach recital last yeat (97), this was the disc my party and I shoved in the CD player first. What a relief! Full recommendation. | | Acknowledgements: | Thank you to the following for submitting this recording and for your comments: | | Date First Submitted: | 01/13/1998 | | Purchasing: | Suggested Purchasing Sources
