Surprised not to see the Schwarzkopf performance of 51 not mentioned. When I first heard in the early 60s at the old Record Center on Eighth Street in Greenwich Vilage the brilliant clarity of the soprano and the trumpet froze me to the spot where I was standing. The final Hallelujahs are amazing virtuosity and penetrate the flesh. The performance has been issued in many vynil formats and is on cd. More than forty years later, it's still a knock out. |
