The sorpranos are excellent. The Version of "Schafe konnen sicher weiden" (the famous "Sheep May Safely Graze") in BWV 208 is quite enjoyable. Tempo is a little fast, but in turn it makes it less boring. All of the choruses in both cantatas are catchy. The opening chorus of "Preise dein Glucke" is a parody of "Osanna" from the Mass in B minor. It starts with an orchestration before the choir as well as the end, unlike Osanna. The Cover art is unique, and different from the previous Bach Cantata discs that Leonhardt recorded. I'd definately recommend this one.
Unfortunately this disc is not availiable in the USA yet. The only Bach Cantata disc of Leonhardt on Philips available in the USA is Cantatas 201 and 173A (446716), and even that is a special import, so it might not be availiable anymore. You can, however, order all 5 of the Bach Cantata discs with Leonhardt on Philips by Calling 1-800-567-8468. HMV in Canada. Maybe PolyGram in the USA will be smart enough to release this, and soon the other 4. Not as special Imports, but domestcally, because special imports are hard to get, and run out of stock too quickly. |
