"...it comes as a great surprise and pleasure to discover that, despite their keyboard origins, the variations turn out to be quite well suited for string instruments, and that such a recasting sheds new light on the music by drawing out expressive elements that previously could only be hinted at when played on a harpsichord or even a modern piano." - from the liner notes by John Adams

Well said. I agree this recording is unique and truly enhances the Variations.

This is an astonishing performance of incredible virtuosity performed by some of the world's greatest string musicians. The audio is incredible. The transcription is a note for note transfer from keyboard to strings with all repeats. No one who loves the GV's should miss this! I've never heard a string orchestra this brilliant before. I didn't know this level of brilliance was even possible! You will hear the same music you've always heard, but in this string orchestration, you will hear it all in a wonderful new way. My only wish is that the variations were recorded together on one long track, instead of separate tracks. But still, not to be missed! |
